About the Staff of the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa
Omar Figueroa is the founder and principal attorney at the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa, a
boutique Northern California law firm serving the cannabis industry. A pioneering cannabis
lawyer with more than eighteen years of experience providing legal counsel and representation
to members of California’s cannabis industry, Omar is an expert in California cannabis law and
is frequently quoted in the media. Omar has taught several Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
seminars to lawyers on cannabis-related topics, including legal ethics and the Medicinal and
Adult Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA).
Before establishing a successful practice in Sonoma County in early 2010, Mr. Figueroa shared
office space for over ten years with esteemed colleagues at Pier 5 Law Offices in San
Francisco, a community of independent sole practitioners specializing in aggressive criminal
defense. He considers himself lucky to have been trained by living legend J. Tony Serra, a
master of the noblest art: defending the accused before a jury. Omar is a graduate of Gerry
Spence’s Trial Lawyers College, which is considered the most prestigious and selective trial
advocacy college in America. He is also a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School.
In recent years, Mr. Figueroa has expanded his practice to include services for California’s legal
cannabis industry, encompassing general business law, licensing and regulatory compliance,
and other services such as dispute resolution and intellectual property. In 2017, Omar published
his first book, Cannabis Codes of California. His third compendium of the Golden State’s ganja
rules, California Cannabis Laws and Regulations: 2019, was recently released.
Mr. Figueroa is a member of the California State Bar, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice,
Sonoma County Bar Association, California NORML, Cannabis Action Network, Americans for
Safe Access, Stanford Alumni Association, Association of Yale Alumni, a Founding Lifetime
Member of the National Cannabis Bar Association, and a lifetime member of the NORML Legal
Committee. He is also a former member of the Board of the ACLU of Sonoma County. Omar
currently serves as a member of Sonoma County’s Cannabis Advisory Group.
Lauren Mendelsohn is a Senior Associate Attorney at the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa, a boutique Northern California-based law firm serving the cannabis industry. She currently focuses on permitting and licensing for cannabis businesses, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, policy advocacy, and post-conviction relief.
For the past several years, Lauren has been active in the drug policy reform movement as well as other progressive and humanitarian efforts. She is the former Chair of the Board of Directors of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), an international non-profit organization working to end the counterproductive “War on Drugs.” Currently, she sits on the Board of Directors of the Sonoma County Growers Alliance, an organization that advocates on behalf of local cannabis businesses.
Lauren earned her J.D. from the University of California, Irvine School of Law and her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Maryland. She is a proud member of the California State Bar, the Sonoma County Bar Association, the National Cannabis Bar Association, SSDP’s Sensible Society, the National Lawyers Guild, California NORML, NCIA, Americans for Safe Access, and the ACLU.
